Option B: When The Tears Fall-Leadership, Tragedy, and Ronald Reagan, 1985-1986

LEADERSHIP NOW WORKSHOP:
Leading During Tragedy—Ronald Reagan and the Challenger Space Shuttle
Dr. Dan Miller
The Issue
You are in a unique position of having to help people deal with tragedy. No matter how hard we try to avoid it, despite all the planning and prevention, tragedy strikes. And people turn to you to help understand, respond to, and make some sort of sense of tragedy. Tragedy is one of the most difficult settings for being a leader. You already know that.
The Story
Ronald Reagan delivered a stirring speech after the horrific explosion of the U.S. space shuttle Challenger and the deaths of its seven crew members. Many people who lived through the event can still recall where they were when they heard about the explosion or listened to Reagan’s speech. But there is much more that people don’t know about this dramatic moment in American history, and that’s what I want to share with you in helping you become a better leader for the next tragic situation.
My Approach
We will immerse ourselves in the flow of events that occurred in late 1985 and early 1986. We’ll become part of a real story, a true story, that reveals fascinating and yet often overlooked elements of leadership during tragedy, including higher purpose, vision, the rings of followers, and the bond between followers and leader. Prepare to be surprised. Prepare to be engaged. Prepare to emerge with new awareness and new tools for your leadership in tragic situations.
